Abstract

Purpose

The terrorism of “Islamic State” (IS) is increasingly coming to be seen as a complicated and complex phenomenon permeated with various political goals and personal interests. The effectiveness of terrorist recruiters determines the need to identify the reasons for the appeal of the IS image and for the effectiveness of IS propaganda in different population layers and social groups. From this perspective, it is crucial to identify the significant social factors that are most affecting the perception of the terrorist activities of “IS” and their role in creating and shaping IS images. The purpose of this paper is to determine the role of social capital in the perception of the IS image.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is based on the findings of a sociological survey of a sample comprising 881 Russian students. In this research, six scales were used to identify the attitude of Russian students toward IS: informational awareness of IS; the image of IS fighters; the image of IS as an organization; attitude to an anti-terrorist policy; the role of the mass media; the level of social capital. Factorial analysis of the main components was conducted for each of the scales.

Findings

Subsequently, the correlation analysis of the relationship of social capital to the perception of the image of “IS” was conducted. Six main IS images were identified in the minds of the students. The research results show that survey participants with high levels of social capital are significantly more negative in their perception of the activities of the terrorist organization in question.

Originality/value

From this perspective, it is crucial to identify the significant social factors that are most affecting the perception of the terrorist activities of “IS” and their role in creating and shaping IS images. This study focuses on determining the role of social capital in the perception of the IS image.

Abstract

Purpose

National terrorism is a comprehensive problem caused by various factors and conditions that give rise to or are capable of giving rise to it. The paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

The purpose of this study is to identify the main risk factors contributing to the emergence of terrorism, based on an expert survey of the academic community and law enforcement officers who are directly involved in the security sector in the Russian regions.

Findings

The study identified 72 causes of national terrorism, which were then transformed into a questionnaire. The findings helped identify 18 major risk factors associated with the emergence of terrorism.

Originality/value

It was concluded that the elimination of these risk factors would generally reduce the impact of more insignificant factors. The results of the study may be useful for countries and national regions exposed to a high level of terrorist activity.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of the paper is to identify the characteristics of terrorist risks in the regional aspect by using the example of the Russian Federation.

Design/methodology/approach

The cluster analysis revealed four groups of regions that differ in the level of terrorist risk. Then, based on comparison of regression analysis results for the selected regions and the country as a whole, a characteristic of factors contributing to and preventing terrorism was presented.

Findings

The research results showed that the main problems affecting the growth of terrorism, both at the national and regional levels, are the low level of economic freedom, as well as high political instability, crime rates, corruption and digital globalization processes. Therefore, when developing and implementing a counter-terrorism policy, more attention should be paid to these areas.

Originality/value

Assessing terrorist risk across national regions is a relevant problem. The identification of patterns in the commission of terrorist attacks and their regional distribution are of great importance for national counter-terrorism strategies.
